![]() ![]() Note the warm water in the depths starting to move from west to east after March 2015 and peaking near the end of 2015. It shows temperature anomalies that is, how much the temperatures at the surface and in the depths ranged above or below the long-term averages. The visualization above shows a cross-section of the Pacific Ocean from January 2015 through December 2016. These in situ instruments (more than 3,000 of them) record temperatures and other traits in the top 300 meters of the global ocean. ![]() This mass, referred to as the "western Pacific warm pool," extends down to about 200 meters in depth, a phenomenon that can be observed by moored or floating instruments in the ocean: satellite-tracked drifting buoys, moorings, gliders, and Argo floats that cycle from the ocean surface to great depths. While easterly winds tend to be dry and steady, Pacific westerlies tend to come in bursts of warmer, moister air.īut as an El Niño pattern develops and trade winds weaken, gravity causes the warm water to move east. The typically strong high-pressure systems of the eastern Pacific weaken, thus changing the balance of atmospheric pressure across the eastern, central, and western Pacific. The circulation of the air above the tropical Pacific Ocean responds to this tremendous redistribution of ocean heat. It also reduces the upwelling of cooler, nutrient-rich waters from the deep-shutting down or reversing ocean currents along the equator and along the west coast of South and Central America. This allows great masses of warm water to slosh from the western Pacific toward the Americas. Easterly trade winds (which blow from the Americas toward Asia) falter and can even turn around into westerlies. That change is intimately tied to the atmosphere and to the winds blowing over the vast Pacific. ![]() During an El Niño event, the surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become significantly warmer than usual. ![]() ![]() When reading descriptions of the font, some call it modern and others old-world. If you are looking for a font that is a bit more regal, but not stiff, then this is the one you definitely must look at. However, it’s not so formal as to look old school. Georgia is a bit more formal than some of the more common sans serif fonts. Since the typeface is still legible at low resolutions, it creates an old-world charm with a modern appeal for online designs. Georgia has been described as having a typographic personality - even called friendly and intimate. It’s no wonder Georgia remains a popular font in the 2020s, with more and more people accessing the internet via mobile devices and the many digital ads and documents of the day. Not many fonts stand up to scaling up and down, but Georgia works well in both instances. Even if they pull it up on their smartphone, it remains legible. You can share a document online with a business associate. The creators tweaked the font for clarity on small screens. It’s such a versatile font that it pairs well with serif, sans serif or calligraphy fonts. You’ll catch it on book covers, websites and wedding invitations. You might also see Georgia used for subheadings on a poster. You’ll see Georgia used often in resumes for a clean, crisp look potential employers find easy to skim and get details from a job candidate. If you’re looking for a font you can use across different mediums, this one is well-suited to multiple uses. Georgia isn’t pixelated at all, but offers beautiful clarity both in print and in digital format. In larger sizes, it does not come off as squatty looking. The higher x-height gives it an elegant look other fonts might miss. Carter points out that when they were designed, Georgia and Verdana were about binary bitmaps and turning every pixel either on or off in black or white. One way to describe Georgia is that it is similar to Times New Roman but is taller and bolder. And the typeface is darker, which makes it easy to read even at smaller sizes. The lower case letters in Georgia are a bit taller than some other fonts. ![]() The type has a slightly formal look because of the varied stroke weights throughout. However, they are not so swirly that they’re hard to read. This creates a continuous look throughout the text. If you’ve studied calligraphy, then this font might look slightly familiar because the letters blend one to the next. ![]() It is slightly italic looking, but not quite as slanted. Georgia has strokes that are both thick and thin, switching back and forth between the two. Everyone on the team could easily work on the same design without it being skewed on different platforms. People began to see the many different applications for the font. The font was compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, and because the font looked the same on both systems, it became popular with designers. It then came as a supplemental pack of fonts. The initial release of Georgia was bundled in the core fonts for Web. The addition of serifs makes the font suited both for headlines and body text. Georgia fits that bill because it creates an interesting typeface that is still legible and easy to read. The Internet was growing by leaps and bounds in the early 90s, so there was a real need for fonts that would look good even at low resolutions and in smaller sizes. Such regal beginnings inspired Carter in his own work with typefaces. Where did the name “Georgia” come from? It’s said that the idea for the typeface name came from a headline at the time: “Alien Heads found in Georgia.” Carter’s father was a British historian of typography, even working for Her Majesty’s Stationery Office and University Press at Oxford. ![]() The history of the font is inspired by Scotch Roman designs from the 1800s, and it came to life in 1993, thanks to Matthew Carter. Like other serif designs, Georgia has a formalness to it - but it stays readable on a variety of screen sizes. It’s a versatile typeface that works well with text that will display on a screen. Taking a look at the history of the font and the ways other designers have used the font, though, can make a huge difference. It can feel a bit overwhelming trying to figure out which one works best for which project. If you search for fonts on any typeface site, you’ll find thousands and thousands of fonts available. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though a lot of people say they have problems with their RTCs I didn’t experience any of them. For all the white angst about using white emoji, he’d argue using a darker skin tone is an even bigger decision for people of color. In a Twitter conversation last year, Aditya Mukerjee, an engineer in New York, advocated for eliminating the racial modifiers altogether, arguing there are few situations when a generic emoji and a bit of context are not enough. “This conversation could be completely different in Africa,” Chow-White says. Elsewhere in the world, including the Middle East, white emoji are more common. It’s worth noting the unpopularity of white emoji tentatively appears confined to the United States. It flies in the face of technology and computer code being neutral and value-free.” But we take zeros and ones and we wrap meaning about them. “We’re taking these symbols, and we’re wrapping our own ideas around them that are heavily racialized,” he says. But there’s also the view that this is me giving you a high five.” While she’s willing to use darker emoji in the former case, the latter seems more fraught. “You can kind of see the emoji as divorced from yourself-this is a symbol of thumbs up, a symbol of high five. “Some of it, for me, is a question of what context are you using the emoji in,” she said over the phone. At the time, the new racemoji had just launched on the iPhone.įriedman: I have this question that I’ve been meaning to ask you, because it’s something that happens when my new emoji keyboard pops up. Last year, the hosts of the podcast Call Your Girlfriend, Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow, debated whether white people can use darker skin tones when sending emoji, or if that amounts to cultural appropriation. At the same time, they said, it feels like co-opting something that doesn’t exactly belong to white people-weren’t skin-tone modifiers designed so people of color would be represented online? The folks I talked to before writing this story said it felt awkward to use an affirmatively white emoji at a time when skin-tone modifiers are used to assert racial identity, proclaiming whiteness felt uncomfortably close to displaying “white pride,” with all the baggage of intolerance that carries. “It’s not surprising to me that people are not opting to go lighter, even if that’s closer to what their skin tone is, because they’re kind of represented by the default anyway,” he said.īut this effect may also signal a squeamishness on the part of white people. and consultant in San Francisco who has studied emoticons, notes that many of the default symbols are phenotypically white: The symbol has blonde hair on Apple devices, etc. This might be the case because most default emoji, although they appear yellow, are actually white. ![]() ![]() X‑Plane contains subsonic and supersonic flight dynamics, allowing users to predict the flight characteristics of the slowest aircraft or the fastest.
